People, Place, Planet #4: David Mikhail lecture

Join us for the next event in our People, Place, Planet series where David Mikhail will present a lecture titled: "How we build world class sustainable housing at scale. Affordably."

We are delighted to welcome David Mikhail to deliver the fourth event in our People, Place, Planet series for 2021.

Our People, Place, Planet programme showcases the diverse people behind great placemaking, progressive climate action, and innovation.

David will describe how his practice has evolved its approach to housing and the sustainable agenda. He will also talk about the RIBA Stirling Prize winning Goldsmith Street for Norwich City Council, how this project was possible, and what the main challenges were before and during the construction phase. Goldsmith Street demonstrates how to achieve sustainable low rise, high density living. With a shared vision to create a low energy development, the scheme was master-planned around these principles from the outset to make best use of solar access and combat fuel poverty for social housing tenants.

David will also discuss the practice’s work with York City Council and their Housing Delivery Programme, which will provide 600 homes across seven sites. All homes are being designed by Mikhail Riches and their own multi-disciplinary team. The city has set the ambitious target of not only Certified Passivhaus, but net zero CO2 in-use as well.

The talk will continue with an introduction to the Uplands in Nailsea, North Somerset, a landscape-led housing project addressing the transition between suburban and rural landscapes. While providing great homes for families and downsizers, it will also support and enhance local wildlife. The scheme's aim is to provide a residential development, in a manner which both maximises potential to provide new homes, while respecting the local surroundings. responding to local housing demand within the context of the climate crisis, and providing a benchmark for other future sites in the local area and across North Somerset as a whole.

This event will be hosted by Jane Hamlyn, RIBA South West Chair and Andrew Forth, Interim Director of Policy and Public Affairs, External Affairs.
