About Bodmin Jail
Bodmin Jail was a derelict, Grade II Listed 18th century prison that once housed hundreds of criminals. It has been restored and reinvented as a luxury boutique hotel, leading visitor attraction and venue in Cornwall.
The design intertwines the imposing original architecture of the 300-year-old jail with creative, contemporary design. 85% of the original fabric of the building with the once derelict cell blocks of the jail, now form the 70-room hotel and part of the museum. A glazed roof to the hotel atrium retains the magical natural light qualities of the ruin.
The visitor attraction features a brand-new stone gabion clad Dark Wall Experience building. Technology and theatrical effects are combined, treating visitors to an immersive experience. The administration building has been completely refurbished to accommodate the cocktail bar, gym and cafe, and there is a new restaurant in what was once the jail’s chapel.
