Join us to celebrate Stanton Williams’ beautifully integrated infill scheme at Emmanuel College, Cambridge; a project that elevates student life while enhancing a historic site. Winner of a RIBA East 2025 Regional Award and named East Building of the Year, this inspiring scheme is yours to discover on our guided tour.
The development begins with a glazed courtyard bar and social hub for students, framed by landscaping inspired by traditional university quads. Through a series of exquisitely detailed blocks, varying in scale and material palette, Stanton Williams has reclaimed valuable ‘found space’ within the site. Predominantly red brickwork ties the new elements together, with varied bond patterns adding richness and sensitivity to the historic context.
New accommodation now houses 50 students who were previously off-site, supported by classrooms and other facilities. Beneath ground level, a generous event space benefits from exceptional sound insulation, showcasing the project’s thoughtful, holistic approach to design.
"Surrounded on three sides by the College’s Grade II* listed park and garden, great care has been taken to draw in key landscape features to reinforce the Cambridge courtyard layout. As a model for how to conserve and enhance a historic place for future generations, this is a project which is so well integrated with its context that it feels instantly as if it was always a part of the university plan." - RIBA awards jury
