All members of RIBA Chelmsford, RIBA Colchester and RIBA South Essex are welcome to attend this online event with special guest speaker Julie Fleck OBE, MRTPI (Rtd) - Strategic Access and Inclusive Design Adviser.
Julie began her career in local government as a town planner, but soon specialised in access for disabled people, helping to improve access and facilities for disabled people in the City of London. In 2001 she moved to the Greater London Authority (GLA) to develop the London Plan policies on inclusive design, writing the Supplementary Planning Guidance 'Accessible London: Achieving an Inclusive Environment’.
Julie became Project Lead on a Government Paralympic Legacy project aimed at stimulating a systematic change in the way built environment professionals are taught inclusive design – the Built Environment Professional Education Project (BEPE). She continued to lead the BEPE project when it moved to the Construction Industry Council in 2016, helping with its transition from a government driven project to an industry owned and led project.
Julie continues as a freelance Strategic Access and Inclusive Design Adviser, helping to shift attitudes and behaviours in the construction industry, with the aim of achieving an accessible and inclusive environment for all.
Julie is the author of Are you an inclusive designer? published September 2019 by RIBA, a Design Council Built Environment Expert and a member of BSI's B/559 Committee, the London Diocesan Advisory Committee, the Royal Town Planning Institute (Rtd) and the Access Association. She was awarded an OBE in 2004 for services to disabled people.
