RIBA North East Sustainability Mastermind: retrofitting historic and vernacular buildings

Join us to explore the challenges and opportunities associated with upgrading historic and vernacular buildings to reduce carbon emissions.

In this RIBA North East Sustainability Mastermind session, we will explore the challenges and opportunities associated with upgrading historic and vernacular buildings to dramatically reduce carbon emissions while preserving their architectural integrity.

We will look at the principles of taking a ‘safe’ fabric first approach and will look at how these have been applied to a range of deep retrofit projects over the last 15 years. We will highlight the vernacular nature of such measures and the need to respect past material knowledge.

Our expert speaker will be Bill Butcher, Director and co-founder of Green Building Store. Bill is a Certified Passivhaus Consultant and has led the construction arm of the business for many years. He has led on the company’s pioneering Passivhaus projects, including the Denby Dale Passivhaus, as well as developing a Passivhaus approach to a number of radical retrofits. Having originally trained as a Quantity Surveyor he has over 45 years of practical building experience.
