RIBA South Conservation online talk: Reimagining Newhaven Fort

Join us for a fascinating online talk about the transformation of Newhaven Fort, hosted by RIBA South Conservation group, and speaker Ryan Stock.

Our November Conservation Group online talk turns its focus to Newhaven Fort. Pioneering in its use of mass concrete and embedded design, the fort has witnessed decades of military service, post-war decline, and, more recently, a major programme of conservation and renewal.

Concrete, Casemates, and Coastal Defence – Reimagining Newhaven Fort

Built between 1864 and 1871, Newhaven Fort stands as a nationally significant Palmerston fort. After decades of military service and post-war decline, the site was revived in the 1980s and has since welcomed visitors as a heritage attraction.

In early 2025, a £7.5M Towns Fund grant supported an ambitious conservation and redevelopment project. This programme enhanced accessibility, stabilised vulnerable structures, and enriched interpretation, while carefully preserving the fort’s layered history and architectural integrity.

The project illustrates how even the most technically complex heritage sites can be sensitively adapted, ensuring long-term sustainable use while maintaining their historic and architectural resonance.
