This event will bring together RIBA South West chairs, branch chairs and councillors: online for the first time. You will meet those whose role comes to an end, those staying on and will also welcome those newly elected.
Nansledan: Popular Development, sustainability, and the search for virtuous circles
The local presentations will be followed by a lecture by our guest speaker, Hugh Petter, director of ADAM Architecture, and Master-planner and Co-ordinating Architect for Nansledan, Newquay.
Nansledan is an urban extension to the Cornish coastal town of Newquay and embodies the principles of architecture and urban planning championed by HRH The Prince of Wales. It is being developed by the Duchy of Cornwall in partnership with a consortium of regional developers, and is a project shortlisted for a RIBA 2020 South West Award. Newquay has a resident population of some 30,000 people that rises to over 100,000 during the summer months on account of its beaches and its reputation as the surf capital of the South West of England. The local economy is largely dependent on high volume low spending tourism.
Nansledan was conceived by the local authority, working in partnership with the landowners and the existing residents of Newquay, to strengthen and diversify the local economy.
Over time Nansledan will evolve into a community of more than 4,000 homes and support a similar number of new jobs. It will include its own high street, church, school and public spaces, helping to meet the future needs of Newquay in a complementary and sustainable way.
Hugh Petter
BA(Hons), DIPL ARCH, RIBA, FRSA
Hugh Petter is an architect and urban designer, specialising in traditional design. His work includes new buildings, alterations, extensions and repairs to historic properties, as well as design consultancy and master-planning in Britain, Italy, the Caribbean, North America and Russia. Hugh’s architectural and academic projects have won a number of prizes and he is committed to supporting the development of modern classicism through his numerous professional memberships. He has published various articles and essays on architectural subjects and is a visiting tutor to several colleges in the UK and abroad.
