Join the Suffolk team as we mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic Willis building in Ipswich; a landmark of modern architecture and one of the earliest major works by Norman Foster and Wendy Cheesman, designed shortly after the founding of Foster Associates.
About the Willis Building
Built between 1970 and 1975 as the regional headquarters for Willis Faber and Dumas (now Willis Towers Watson), the building stands as a pioneering example of the 'high tech' architectural movement. Today, it remains a dynamic workspace, housing over 1,300 staff within its distinctive open plan layout across three floors.
Externally, the building reinforces rather than confronts the urban grain. Low rise, with a freeform plan, it responds to the scale of surrounding buildings, while its facade curves in response to the irregular medieval street pattern.
About the event
We are thrilled to welcome Spencer de Grey, Senior Partner and Head of Design at Foster and Partners, who will deliver an exclusive talk and presentation. Spencer will offer rare insights into the building’s design journey, architectural innovations, and the enduring legacy of this groundbreaking structure.
Following the talk, guests will enjoy a guided tour of the building in an exclusive opportunity to explore one of Ipswich’s most celebrated architectural achievements from the inside.
