About Saltdean Lido

Saltdean Lido, the only Grade II* listed lido in the UK, has been described as “one of the Seven Wonders of the English Seaside” by English Heritage and “probably the most architecturally significant open-air pool in the country” by the 20th Century Society.

Originally designed in the ‘International Style’ by London architect Richard W. H. Jones and opened in 1938, more recently, the lido had fallen into disrepair.

The pool and its art-deco building have now been brought back into public use by the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company and the Saltdean Lido Trust, with the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other funders. They appointed RH Partnership Architects to lead the transformation, restoring this iconic 1930s building to its former glory.

About RIBA Sussex Branch

Working on behalf of chartered architects across Sussex, we deliver a range of events, student mentoring, and support meetups for local practices.

We aim to highlight good practice and facilitate knowledge sharing within the architectural community.

The activities and functions of a RIBA branch include:

  • networking and community building: Organising events, lectures, and social gatherings to facilitate networking among local architects and professionals in the built environment.
  • supporting students and emerging professionals: Traditionally, Branches collaborate with their local schools of architecture, facilitating connections between students, young architects, and established professionals.
  • knowledge sharing: Creating platforms for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and knowledge within the local architectural community.
  • promoting local architecture: Educating the public about the value of good design and architecture in the community.
  • advocacy and representation: Representing the interests of local architects and the architectural profession to local authorities, government bodies, and other relevant stakeholders.
