Skill Up: A pavilion for Barbara Hepworth

Thursday 5 August 2021, 2pm-4.30pm

Online workshop for young people aged 15-18

Join us for this creative online workshop taking inspiration from the work of Barbara Hepworth for young people aged 15-18. You will learn a methodology for sketching an idea for a pavilion, transforming it into a model, and drawing it in different scales and levels of detail.

Exploring tension and compression and how materials work together, you will use saved items of recycling to represent your design inspired by Barbara Hepworth’s legacy. Moving on to record your pavilion and learn about plan, elevation and section before producing a 3D perspective drawing and presenting your work to the group.

Materials

  • recycled plastic containers, bottles, toilet rolls, cardboards etc (anything plastic/cardboard)
  • string
  • nail or something sharp to puncture holes in the plastic and cardboard

This online creative architecture workshop is led by architect educator Basia Swierc of Westport Architects for young people aged 15 to 18 years.

About the workshop series

Our workshops for ages 15 to 18 "skill up" teenagers who are thinking about studying architecture or design. Participants think critically, share their views on architecture and express themselves through creative practice. In past workshops, participants have learned how to work to an architectural brief, improve portfolios, develop architectural drawing skills using a variety of media (including digital drawing on iPads) and photography skills, and work individually and collaboratively to think about how to design sustainable and responsible architecture.

The workshop will take place online via Microsoft Teams. A link will be sent to participants with confirmed bookings. This event is suitable for those aged 15 to 18 years old. These workshops are led by professional educators and supervised by RIBA staff. Please see the materials list for items that will be required during the workshop.

If you're under 18, tickets must be booked by a parent or guardian. Online booking in advance is essential and if we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event we cannot allow the participant to attend.

Workshop costs

  • £20 excluding booking fee
  • £15 for participants who qualify for free school lunch (Proof required)
