Tales from the high street with Urbed+

David Rudlin delivers this fascinating session tracing stories through the past, present and the future of our high streets.

As part of York Design Week, David Rudlin delivers this fascinating session tracing stories through the past, present and the future of our high streets.

The ‘crisis on the high street’ has been with us for more than a decade, and then came COVID-19. Urbed+ is currently the recipient of the 1851 Commission Built Environment Fellowship allowing them to research the history of our high streets and the forces that have shaped them over the last 60 years - and through the current pandemic.

The approach is to tell the stories of these places in order to look beyond the statistics and the headlines. The result is not as depressing as you might think. Sure we have a crisis of big retail, but while our high streets will always be in a state of change, this change isn't necessarily for the worse.
