The York Architectural Association is excited to invite everyone with an interest in architecture and the public realm to join this year’s York Unlocked 2024 Festival. Spanning two full weekend days, this event, powered by a dedicated team of volunteers, opens the doors to York’s most intriguing and significant buildings, all completely free of charge.
Founded by Kathy King in 2022, York Unlocked was inspired by the successful models of London Open House and Bristol Open Doors. Since its inception, the festival has quickly gained momentum, becoming one of York’s most anticipated annual events.
The festival aims to educate, inspire, and deepen our appreciation of architecture by giving access to York’s architectural gems; some well-known, others hidden or typically inaccessible. Imagine rediscovering familiar places from a fresh perspective or exploring hidden treasures that have long been out of reach.
This year's festival will feature a variety of attractions and tours, including:
- Goodramgate: Explore historic sites like The Merchant Taylor’s Hall, Bedern Hall, and Monkbar.
- York Conservation Trust: Visit De Grey House, Herbert House, 23 Stonegate, Assembly Rooms, St Anthony’s Garden, The Thin Ice Press, and St Anthony’s Hall.
- Guildhall York Council Chambers Tours: Tour the medieval Guildhall, where Council meetings are still held today.
- York Art Gallery, Assembly Rooms, and Terry’s Clock Tower: Enjoy exclusive behind-the-scenes tours.
- Architecture on the Ouse: Take a cruise on the Ouse on both Saturday and Sunday.
- Walking tours: Explore historic pubs and churches on guided walks.
