Award RIBA South East Award 2025 and RIBA South East Small Project of the Year 2025

The award winner tells us: "Triangle House is a detached home at the end of a cul-de-sac in Epsom, developed by Ideal Homes in the 1950s. Artefact created a new wing to the house that chases the afternoon sun at the back of the garden.
Crafted from triangular blue blocks and terracotta tiles, with a warm yellow ceiling, the extension references the tones of the existing house and the client’s heritage, inspired by the book ‘Caribbean Style’. The architecture is framed by an exotic planting scheme by Phenomena, as lush planting unfurls along the sweeping blue terrace that unites the existing house and the extension."
The jury says: "The colour palette of blue, yellow and pale terracotta was inspired by a painting belonging to the owners and informed the project as it evolved. The use of the exposed, beautifully laid, grey hollow blockwork in the walls of the new space met the constraints of the budget and minimised embodied carbon. It also serves as a calm backdrop – uncluttered by artworks – to the pink floor tiles, tutti-frutti terrazzo kitchen counter and acid lemon ceiling joists which sail beneath a round rooflight. The relocated kitchen, dining and snug space now opens onto a wide terrace that is bathed in afternoon sunshine, a row of tall glazed doors stretching along its length."
