The Colin Rowe Lecture series: Hélène Binet

Join us for this year's Colin Rowe Lecture which aims to discuss the role of the image in architecture, particularly the crucial role of architectural photography. This year's lecture is presented by Swiss-French photographer Hélène Binet, who over a period of more than 35 years has captured both contemporary and historic architecture.

In an informal setting and in dialogue with experienced and imaginative guests, the Colin Rowe Lectures aim to discuss the role of the image in architecture, particularly the crucial role of architectural photography.

The lectures are considered as an open forum of discussion for architects, photographers, students and the simply curious.

After the lecture, Hélène Binet will be in conversation with Dr Marco Iuliano, University of Liverpool.

This year's lecture forms part of our programming for the RIBA Photo Festival 2023.

About the speaker

Hélène Binet is a Swiss-French photographer based in London. She studied photography at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Rome, the city in which she spent most of her formative years.

Over a period of more than 35 years, Hélène has captured both contemporary and historic architecture. Her work has been published in a wide range of books and shown and collected in numerous museums.

Her latest exhibitions are Nature Time and Architecture, Salone del Mobile, Milano, Light Lines: the architectural photographs of Hélène Binet, Royal Academy of Arts, London, and a retrospective of her work at the Power Station of Art Shanghai.

As an advocate of analogue photography, Hélène works exclusively with film. In 2019, she was awarded the Ada Louise Huxtable Prize for her exceptional contribution to the field of architecture.

Hélène was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2007 and in 2015 was the recipient of the Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award. A complete monograph of her work will be published by Lund Humphries in 2024.

After the lecture, Hélène Binet will be in conversation with Dr Marco Iuliano from the University of Liverpool.

The Colin Rowe Lecture series is a collaboration between the Centre for Architecture and Visual Arts at the University of Liverpool and the Robert Elwall Photographs Collection at RIBA.
