How can our cities transform to become more welcoming to wildlife? Can we and should we design buildings for animals, and what is our role as architects in tackling biodiversity loss?
In this online workshop, we will explore the possibilities of architecture that aims to benefit humans and wild habitats alike. We will seek inspiration from animals, collaborate on ideas as a group, and design and develop ideas to finally build a wild shelter: a bus stop that is additionally a shelter for the commuting wild creatures in the city. Let's show the city the wild potential of architecture!
This workshop is led by architect and educator Basia Swierc of West Port Architects, for children aged 11 to 15 years.
This workshop is a repeat of a Design Time workshop from February half term.
Materials
- at least three cardboard boxes of different sizes (these could be from cereal, tea or biscuits)
- old postcards or Christmas cards
- any recycled paper, such as newspaper
- toilet rolls
- scissors
- tape or double sided tape
- glue
- ruler
- pencil
- string
- plasticine
- natural materials (such as twigs, leaves, moss, little stones)
Optional
- coloured pens
- bubble wrap or plastic foil packaging
- wire
- cork
- plastic bottle caps
- BBQ skewers/toothpicks
About the workshop series
Our Design Time (previously Design Day) workshops, for ages 11 to 15, take architectural design a step further by providing context and knowledge of the built environment to spark creativity. Past workshops have focused on different architectural styles, small and large scale construction methods, traditional and digital drawing techniques, architectural games and using software to design collaboratively in a shared space.
The workshop will take place online using Microsoft Teams. A link will be sent to participants with confirmed bookings.
These workshops are led by professional educators and are supervised by RIBA staff. Please see the materials list for items that will be required during the workshop.
If you're under 18, tickets must be booked by a parent or guardian. Online booking in advance is essential. If we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event, we cannot allow the participant to attend.
Workshop costs (introductory rate)
- £20 excluding booking fee
- £15 for participants who qualify for free school lunch (proof required)
