RIBA Oxford: A site visit to a sustainable, self-build case study

RIBA award-winning Adrian James Architects has invited RIBA Oxfordshire to a site visit of his very own half-complete, self-build sustainable house.

We are excited to announce that RIBA award-winning Adrian James Architects has invited RIBA Oxfordshire to a site visit of his half-completed self-build house for the architect's own family.

About the project

This new-build detached house resides on a sloping site, right on the edge of the Oxford Green Belt, with an origami-esque envelope clad entirely in prepatinated copper.  The site purchase, planning, and procurement stories may be of interest to many, however, the focus for the site visit will be on the sustainability journey of the build. Adrian will look at how the house addresses matters such as transport, materials, embodied energy, and green energy generation, and in particular, the issues raised by determining to design the house as a Passivhaus.

The perennial questions apply:

  • is it worth aiming to get the house Passivhaus certified?
  • what happens where design intent pushes against Passivhaus parameters?

Spaces are limited, so book your spot now on Eventbrite

How to get there?

There is a good bus service to Harcourt Hill from near Oxford station; a Brookes bus runs every ten minutes or so from Osney Island to their Harcourt Hill campus, which is about five minutes walk from the site.

Also easily cyclable from the city centre; about 15 minutes (with a steep hill)

There is no parking at the site or on Stanton Road. If coming by car it's best to park at the Brookes Sports car park OX2 9AT, it is a 7-8 minute walk from there to the bottom of Stanton Road.
