RIBA West Midlands: Houlton School - an iconic industrial landmark

Join RIBA West Midlands for an evening with Heyningen & Haward Architects, recent winners of the first RIBA Reinvention Award. They will discuss how the initial proposals took place to create Houlton School and how it became an award-winning building.

Join the RIBA West Midlands alongside recent winners of the first RIBA Reinvention Award, Van Heyningen & Haward Architects for an evening at Houlton School.

During this event, we will discuss, explore, and learn about how the initial proposals happened to create this educational institution as well as any obstacles and the result for both the students and the community in the local area.

As well as the Reinvention Award, Van Heyningen & Haward Architects were winners of a RIBA 2023 Regional Award at this year's RIBA West Midlands ceremony.

About the architects

Van Heyningen & Haward Architects focus on creating buildings and places that are environmentally sustainable and enhance the communities that use them.

Houlton School has been recognised as an exemplary architectural project through a wide range of award wins, including two categories at the Architect Journal’s Retrofit Awards, a Refurb BDA Brick Award, RIBA Reinvention Award and many more.

The practice is constantly learning, project by project, and they consciously embed those lessons within the practice. They are excited to share their lessons learned on Houlton School at this event, from embodied carbon, principles of Passivhaus design, and deep retrofit of a listed building.
