Artist-led tour of The Tree of a Man named Beohha - Becontree now

Photographer Kalpesh Lathigra and RIBA Curator Pete Collard will take guests on an in-depth tour around this new exhibition of photographs, specially commissioned by RIBA as part of the Becontree centenary.

Join us for this intimate and personal tour led by both the photographer Kalpesh Lathigra and RIBA Curator Pete Collard of a brand new exhibition of works commissioned by RIBA as part of the Becontree centenary. The series is presented as an observational study with photographs that shift between architectural portraits and closer studies of some of the many unique details found across the individual homes of the Becontree Estate.

Lathigra will share his experience documenting Becontree over a series of walks between Spring and Summer 2021, reflecting on what he learned about the buildings and people of the estate through this process of close and continual observation.

Kalpesh Lathigra’s work occupies the space between documentary and art. He was educated in Photojournalism at the London College of Printing before joining The Independent as a staff photographer, later covering news and features as a freelancer for the UK national press. In 2000, he left newspaper work to dedicate his practice to documentary projects and assignments, and embarking on long term projects, documenting the lives of widows in India, and looking at life with the Oglala Sioux at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

The new commission Tour of The Tree of a Man named Beohha - Becontree now will be open from 8 October 2021 and is supported using public funding by Arts Council England and the Art Fund with additional support from the Span Trust.

This event is part of the Becontree Centenary, a partnership between Create London and RIBA, supported using public funding from Arts Council England, Art Fund and Span Trust.
