21 September 2018

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has today announced 18 winners of three 2018 bursary and scholarship schemes – RIBA Wren Insurance Association Scholarships, AHR Stephen Williams Scholarship and Part 1 and Part 2 Bursaries.

RIBA Wren Insurance Association Scholarships

The five recipients of the 2018 RIBA Wren Insurance Association Scholarship are:

  • Thomas Badger - London School of Architecture
  • Larry Botchway - Royal College of Art
  • Love Di Marco - Architectural Association School of Architecture
  • Naomi Rubbra - The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL
  • Dominic Walker - The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL

David Stanford, Chairman of The Wren Insurance Association Ltd, said:

“The Wren Insurance Association is proud to have increased its sponsorship of the RIBA Wren Scholarships, now in their sixth year, from £25,000 to £30,000, to be divided between five students. Yet again, we received a large number of submissions for those Scholarships from extremely talented students at many of the UK schools of architecture and, after a lengthy and difficult period of judging, offer our congratulations to this year's winners - Thomas, Larry, Love, Naomi and Dominic. We look forward to mentoring them through the final year of their education and to following their careers in years to come.”

RIBA AHR Stephen Williams Scholarship

The RIBA AHR Stephen Williams Scholarship has been awarded to Farid Abdulla, who will be beginning his Part 2 March at The Manchester School of Architecture this September.

On receiving the scholarship, Farid Abdulla said:

“The path of an Architecture student is long and stressful, there’s no getting away from it. Add in to the mix anything outside the archetypal student experience and you have very testing times. For many mature students taking that leap for a second time to do Part Two is a financial, logistical and emotional step too far.

What RIBA and AHR have done in awarding me the Stephen Williams Scholarship is remove many of the barriers which were preventing me continuing my educational journey towards becoming an architect. I wholeheartedly thank the panel members who chose me and applaud them for considering my entry holistically. This support is life changing and something I am very grateful for.

I want to take this opportunity to recognise teachers. A good teacher can impact a student’s life profoundly. I was blessed to have someone who guided my energy and “put up” with me. Her name is Jane Tankard, a wonderful tutor at Westminster University. Thanks Jane.”

On announcement of the 2018 recipient, AHR Director Gary Overton said:

“It is really encouraging to see such high-quality submissions each year. Through his submission and portfolio Farid demonstrated an impressive level of dedication and commitment to succeed in his ambition to be an architect. His work illustrated an interest in community and social projects executed with great skill and sensitivity. It is a real privilege to be able to award Farid with this year’s scholarship and to support him with mentoring as he completes his studies at The Manchester School of Architecture.”

RIBA President Ben Derbyshire said:

“I am pleased that the RIBA, through the generosity of the Wren Insurance Association, AHR, the Rosenberg Memorial Fund and the Ayyub Malik Trust have been able to support so many students this year. It is really gratifying to be able to reward such talented students and I look forward to following their progress.

The study of architecture is too expensive, and these scholarships and bursaries are vital to enabling many talented and committed individuals to flourish without the burden of financial stress.”

  3. RIBA Part 1 and Part 2 Bursaries support students of architecture throughout two years of study; the second and third years of a Part 1, and the full two years of a Part 2. The schemes have been made possible by generous donations to the RIBA from the Walter Parker Trust, the Rosenberg Memorial Fund and the Ayyub Malik Trust; as well as monies raised through the RIBA Education Fund. The RIBA Part 1 Bursaries were launched this year, supporting talented students enrolled in Part 1 courses who would benefit from financial assistance in order to complete this stage of study. The RIBA Part 2 Bursaries were instigated in 2014, to address student dropout rates by encouraging Part 1 graduates to continue onto their Part 2 courses and progress towards qualification.
  4. The RIBA AHR Stephen Williams Scholarship provides £6,000 to support one student for a period of postgraduate studies lasting up to 12 months in the UK or abroad. AHR also ensure that one of their senior architects is available to mentor the recipient throughout the scholarship period. The Scholarship was established in 2008 thanks to the generous support of AHR Architects. It is offered in memory of Stephen Williams, a past Director, and his commitment to his profession, the education of architects, and the importance of excellent design. This year, the RIBA AHR Stephen Williams Scholarship applications were assessed by Brian Johnson, Director and Past Chairman AHR; Gary Overton, Director AHR; RIBA President Ben Derbyshire; and Alex Scott-Whitby and Roy Khatchadourian, members of the RIBA Education Development Group.
  5. Each recipient of The Wren Insurance Association Limited Scholarship (the architects’ professional indemnity insurance mutual) will receive £6,000 for the last year of their Part 2 course in architecture and the opportunity to be mentored by a member of the Wren. The 2018 judging panel for the RIBA Wren Insurance Association Scholarship was comprised of Aleksandrina Rizova (ALEKSA studio), Nicholas Szczepaniak (Nicholas Szczepaniak Architects), David Hills (DSDHA), David Lawrence (Flanagan Lawrence), Suzette Vela Burkett (Aukett Swanke), David Gloster (Director of Education at RIBA).
