Becontree centenary commissions curator tour - 2 November 2021

Join us for a curator-led tour of two exhibitions at the RIBA as part of the Becontree centenary.

Join RIBA Exhibitions Curator Pete Collard for an intimate tour of our two new commissions: Lived in Architecture with artist Verity-Jane Keefe, and The Tree of a Man named Beohha, new photography by Kalpesh Lathigra, as part of the Becontree centenary.

Lived in Architecture reflects on the political and architectural decision making that has shaped the largest council estate in the UK, linking the personal to the popular, the original to the ready-made and the past to the present. New work by Keefe is presented alongside original objects from the RIBA Collections to reflect an estate that is constantly evolving along with its community, challenging preconceived judgement of what is original and authentic – and to whom? The tour will also delve into the processes behind new photography by Kalpesh Lathigra. Offering a comparative study of present day Becontree, Lathigra draws attention to both the built volumes and the undefined spaces in between, reflecting on the natural order of architecture and the estate’s relationship to the previous landscape.

This event is part of the Becontree centenary, a partnership between Create London and RIBA, supported using public funding from Arts Council England, Art Fund and Span Trust.
