In partnership with Create London and London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, RIBA delivered a year long programme of artistic and architectural commissions, events, learning programmes and exhibitions to celebrate the east London estate.

The Becontree centenary was a year long programme of artistic and architectural commissions, events, learning programmes and exhibitions to mark the 100th anniversary of the Becontree estate in Dagenham, east London.

Hear from RIBA curator Pete Collard, artist Verity-Jane Keefe, architect Jennifer Asiedu and other residents as they discuss the estate's historical and cultural significance as part of RIBA’s Becontree centenary programme.

Explore the exciting programme of events RIBA delivered as part of the Becontree centenary programme, between October 2021 and February 2022.

Working in partnership with Create London and London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, RIBA will deliver programmes for audiences of all ages and backgrounds to experience and discuss the historical significance of the Becontree estate and broader contemporary issues facing large scale town planning, housing and green public spaces. 

On 8 October, two new commissions opened: a contemporary photographic study by Kalpesh Lathigra entitled The Tree of a Man named Beohha - Becontree now at 66 Portland place and Bringing Home the Unknown, a temporary public realm installation in Regent's Park by social enterprise POoR Collective and Mayesbrook Park School, an alternative provision for students in Becontree.

On 21 October, Lived in Architecture - Becontree at 100, a new commission with artist Verity-Jane Keefe opened in the Architecture Gallery at 66 Portland Place. This is followed by an infrastructure project by nimtim architects with artist Katie Schwab who will redesign corner plots on the estate, creating new spaces for residents and visitors to meet, play, grow and rest.

The Becontree centenary is a partnership project between Create London, London Borough of Barking & Dagenham (LBBD) and RIBA, supported by LBBD and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
