Becontree centenary

Becontree centenary

In partnership with Create London and London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, we will be delivering a year long programme of artistic and architectural commissions, events, learning programmes and an exhibition to celebrate the east London estate.

The Becontree centenary is a year long programme of artistic and architectural commissions, events, learning programmes and exhibitions to mark the 100th anniversary of the Becontree estate in Dagenham, east London. Throughout the centenary year we will announce more news and activities on this page.

Book your slot to visit our Becontree centenary exhibitions at 66 Portland Place, London. The Tree of a Man named Beohha, a contemporary photography study by Kalpesh Lathigra in the First Floor Gallery and Lived in Architecture - Becontree at 100 with Verity-Jane Keefe in the Architecture Gallery.

Working in partnership with Create London and London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, RIBA will deliver programmes for audiences of all ages and backgrounds to experience and discuss the historical significance of the Becontree estate and broader contemporary issues facing large scale town planning, housing and green public spaces.

On 8 October, two new commissions open: a contemporary photographic study by Kalpesh Lathigra entitled The Tree of a Man named Beohha - Becontree now at 66 Portland place and Bringing Home the Unknown, a temporary public realm installation in Regent's Park by social enterprise POoR Collective and Mayesbrook Park School, an alternative provision for students in Becontree.

On 21 October, Lived in Architecture - Becontree at 100, a new commission with artist Verity-Jane Keefe will open in the Architecture Gallery at 66 Portland Place. This is followed by an infrastructure project by nimtim architects with artist Katie Schwab who will redesign corner plots on the estate, creating new spaces for residents and visitors to meet, play, grow and rest.
